Love Your Neighbor When You Drive

How serious are you in avoiding distraction when you drive the highways and byways? Today in the United Sates, more than 9 people will be killed and more than 1,153 people will be injured in a crash that will be the result of distracted driving.

In a resent milestone class taught to high school freshman we discussed the freedom and responsibility for those who get behind the wheel of a car. As these teens get their drivers licenses they gain great freedom to go places on their own, to be unsupervised by their parents and are responsible for a 4,000 pound vehicle.

A key bible verse for this class which can be a helpful reminder for all of us who drive comes from Galatians 5:13 which says, “For you were called to freedom, brothers. Only do not use your freedom as an opportunity for the flesh, but through love serve one another.”

You see Jesus through His death and resurrection has given us a new life to be lived in freedom yet we are not to serve ourselves but others with this freedom!

So how is it that you can serve others when you are behind the wheel of a vehicle?

Limit Your Phone Distraction

  • Get a hands free device to answer phone calls
  • Or better yet put you phone on silent and place in the glove compartment
  • Download the “Drive Mobile” app found in your apps store

Limit Other Distraction

  • Don’t eat and drive
  • Primp before or after you drive
  • Ask your passengers to maintain a quite atmosphere
  • Know where you are going

These ideas are clearly common sense yet today people will go against their better judgement and risk hurting someone. Make good use of your freedom and serve your neighbor in love by driving well.
