I remember my kids being engrossed in the picture books of Richard Scarry, especially “What Do People Do All Day.” Cartoon illustrations filled each page describing the different kinds of work that people do—it was fascinating to them…and to me.   What if work is the opportunity to join with others, literally millions of others, in a divine project of vast creativity, vast abundance, for the meeting of needs, for the flourishing of cities, for the life of the world?

What if this all came clear as we considered my granddaughter Ella’s favorite birthday treat and asked—“what is inside of this?”—kind of like Richard Scarry did?  Let’s take a closer look at How Work Works. Read Deuteronomy 8:17-18, 1 Corinthians 12:4-11, 18-20 and John 15:1-2, 7-8.
