On June 19-22 over 160 children and 64 volunteers enjoyed a week of learning, laughing, creating, and experiments. We were able to care for 54 community families too! The VBS music continues to be a huge hit with the students. You can hear even the littlest ones singing phrases like “if God is for us, who can be against us”! We also heard from one parent that it was a blessing to their children to see their pastor up front being silly and having a good time. Another family connected to a downtown church attends our VBS and uses our Kid’s Time ministry because “our church doesn’t have much of a children’s ministry, we love being able to come to Holy Cross.”
On June 9, 15 families joined together for a pizza dinner and outdoor fun. After dinner, the parents learned about a few technology resources, Right Now Media, Plugged In, Protect Young Eyes, that will help them offer quality digital content to their children. On the Sunday following Family Night one young dad mentioned that he had already used one of these digital content resources and found it very helpful! During this time the children created encouragement cards to be used by Love, Inc. for people in need. Then everyone went outside to enjoy yard games and a sweet treat! Next Family Night is October 6.
On June 9th, Young Adults were blessed to connect with one another through doing home repairs for a local congregation member. This “Jenison Serve” opportunity grew out of a StartNew Outreach team initiative to interview the April Food truck guests regarding their unmet needs. It’s encouraging to see how our ongoing Food Truck ministry is opening doors for us to continue to share the love of Jesus and build up the body of Christ in the process. We look forward to how these Jenison Serve events will grow into future opportunities where members feel comfortable inviting & serving with friends that aren’t yet walking with Jesus.
Farewell to Pastor and Cindy Sommerfeld
God has certainly been at work in our midst through the work of Pastor Sommerfeld these past 13 years. So, we’re thankful that on June 25th, the last Sunday before Pastor started as an Intentional Interim Pastor at Trinity Lutheran Church in Utica, MI, we were blessed to recall & celebrate the unique ways that we’ve been led to follow Jesus with Pastor and Cindy in our midst. With one, big, beautiful, worship service, supported by many of our fine arts groups, and a meal afterward, we were encouraged that our faithful God, who has blessed us through the Sommerfelds, would continue to provide for us in the months and years to come. We will continue to follow Jesus together at Holy Cross!!
High School Mission Trip – Destination Flint (June 24-30)
“Amazing, hard-working group of young adults who know the real meaning of being a boots-on-ground missionary close to home.” - Sue A. - Ministry Coordinator at Franklin Avenue Mission.
Our team of 24 teens and 5 adults tackled and accomplished multiple projects during their week of service. They broke up and removed concrete and blacktop, demolished a garage, painted offices, organized a new storage facility, moved pews, tore down fences, uprooted bushes, edged sidewalks, improved a compost bin, hauled and filled six dumpsters, plus cleaned several abandoned lots.
In addition to the projects our students served at the Franklin Avenue Diner where they served meals and worked in a children’s ministry program for neighborhood children.
It was a great week of being the hands, feet and voice of Jesus to the people on the east side of Flint. It was also a great learning experience for our students who gained awareness of the many struggles of inner city poverty.
